Galeone: Juventus ‘unfair’ if they sack Allegri

Massimiliano Allegri’s mentor and close friend Giovanni Galeone confirms the Livorno-born coach won’t resign at the end of the season and feels Juventus would be ‘unfair’ if they sack him.

Allegri is under fire following Juventus’ poor results and performances in the second part of the season, but his mentor Galeone feels the Bianconeri should not sack their coach who is under contract until June 2025.

“I had promised myself I would not watch Juventus again after the defeat against Napoli and so many errors in front of the goal. But Max called me over the last few days so I watched the Milan game,” Galeone, a former Italian coach, told Gazzetta.

“I tried to blow towards the TV trying to push the ball inside the net, but with no determination, you don’t score goals.”

What did Allegri tell him the last time they talked?

“Max was serene, and I’d feel the same way. He is reaching all the targets the club had given him, and his contract expires in 2025.”

Allegri has reiterated that Juventus’ main target this season was to qualify for the Champions League and go as far as possible in the Coppa Italia. The Bianconeri currently sit third and will play in the Coppa Italia Final against Atalanta next month. Therefore, Galeone feels Max should not resign even if he lifts the trophy.

“Why should he do it? He is in the race for all the targets, I don’t think he’s fed up with Juventus,” he said.

“If the club sack him, I think he wouldn’t take it well. It would be unfair especially if he qualifies for the Champions League and wins the Coppa Italia.

“I don’t know how it will end up. But this time I don’t imagine him taking a sabbatical. When you are a coach with Max’s trophy cabinet, finding a new team is not a problem,” continued Galeone.

“They still want him in Arabia, but he doesn’t want to go there and he’s right. Perhaps De Laurentiis will call him again as he has already done in the past. My advice is to stay at Juventus or go to England.

“When Juventus sacked Allegri in 2019, they changed two coaches in two years. The Juventus bench is not for everyone. As for the possible successors, there are rumours about Thiago Motta, but Juventus are a different world.”

Regardless of Allegri’s future, what would Juventus need to be title contenders in 2024-25?

“To get closer [to Inter], not to win, they must get a defender like Pavlovic,  a regista to replace Locatelli who has different characteristics,” Galeone replied.

“I’d get Modric for free. Even if he’s 38, he would still make the difference. Koopmeiners would score some goals. Then, Zirkzee or Scamacca for the attack, but Atalanta don’t want to sell him.”
